This herbal plant has varied species, one out of which is peppermint piperita, a hybrid of water mint and spearmint. The oil is extracted from the part of plant lying above the ground just before flowering. The partly dried plant undergoes the process of steam distillation, yielding 0.1 - 1.0 % essential oil.
Note: Peppermint has often been alleged of causing irritation to the skin, therefore pregnant women should totally avoid its use. Also, children below the age of 7 years should refrain from its use.
